The data on PS 78

Our local LIC middle school is packed and hard to get into. Parents with kids there seem to like it. One hears so. And the neighborhood population is relatively affluent and growing more so — often a tracker of good school cohorts. The cohort is probably the most important thing in a school. But the city has released data they have been using to try measuring teacher value added. A crappy teacher at Stuyvesant will still have brilliant results. E teachers job is to take what they get as input and make it better. With well prepared kids, this raises the bar. With poorly prepared kids, driving improvement may be too but not measured by getting to A+. So the city has been trying to collect data on this and for the first time we see it. How did LIC do?

Pretty “meh”.
