RED HOOKThere will be an emergency meeting tonight [Long Island City Hospital, corner of Atlantic Ave Hicks Street, Brooklyn; 6:30-8:30p] to plot a course of action to save the retired tanker and homeless historic ship the Mary A. Whalen. Security restrictions mean the Red Hook Container Terminal is no longer a viable home for the ship and a move to the Atlantic Basin fell though after years of negotiation. The Mary A. Whalen is caught between the Scylla and Charybdis of needing money to find a home and needing a home to fund ongoing operations. After 8:30p, the planning meeting will adjourn to Montero’s Bar on Hicks Street for further strategizing.
BATTERY PARK CITY/FIDIBarbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel, a renowned national expert in public art and architecture, will advise the Port Authority on how it can best integrate public art and architecture into the World Trade Center site. The agency says that Diamonstein-Spielvogel has four decades of experience as a leading advocate on art and historic preservation efforts, and she will help the Authority bring public art to the world-class site in Lower Manhattan. She will be working pro bono and no Port Authority funds will be used to purchase art for the World Trade Center.
