Following the footsteps of music-content streaming giants such as Pandora and Spotify, Long Island City startup Songza plans to cater to the shift away from downloads, but also hopes to bring something more to the table. What sets their application apart is a feature called music concierge, which compiles lists of songs based on the time of day, the device the individual is using, the day of the week, past preferences, and other factors.
While Pandora generates song lists based on music analyst suggestions from the user’s genre and artist preferences, and Spotify combines social media with music, Songza adds an additional aspect; that is, it can create song lists for specific settings and context.
According to Xconomy, Songza CEO Elias Roman began his career in the music industry in 2006 during his senior year at Brown University, when he and a few of his classmates started Amie Street, another online music startup. Before selling Amie Street to Amazon in 2010, Roman and his colleagues began working with Songza co-founder Aza Raskin and ultimately acquired the firm.
Songza is available on iOS, Android and Kindle Fire tablets.
