Five area women were honored for their contributions to the community March 24 by Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer (D-Sunnyside), at his Second Annual Women’s History Month Awards and Open House. Their names and accomplishments as described by Van Bramer’s office follow.
• Ebony Young, executive director of the Long Island City YMCA. Young has worked diligently with YMCAs across the country, holding positions with Y-USA. As an advocate of youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, she believes that serving people is her ultimate purpose in life. Her ultimate goal in life is to always seek the needs of her community and be diligent in helping others reach their dreams and purpose in life.
• Sherilyn Sabba, editor of the Woodside Herald. Sabba studied at Plattsburgh University and then Stony Brook University, pursuing a degree in criminal justice. While at college, she applied the skills her father taught her in business management, working with construction companies, public speakers and restaurateurs. She has been in the driver’s seat of the Woodside Herald since 2009. Her love of the community shows each week as she strives for the best editorial content for her readers in Sunnyside, Woodside and Long Island City.
• Jean Clancy, co-owner of Claret Wine Bar. Born and raised in Dublin, Ireland, Clancy received her bachelor’s degree in International Marketing and Languages from Dublin City University and the Universite Jean Moulin in Lyon, France. Over the last two decades Clancy has promoted and marketed Irish products to the U.S. market. In 2008, she and her business partner, Niall Costello, signed the lease for Claret Wine Bar on Skillman Avenue and 46th Street, a staple of Sunnyside’s economy.
• Patrice Lee, owner of April Glass. Lee not only cares about her community but also shows efforts at developing it economically, demonstrated in not only one position but others. Today, she remains active, serving on the Executive Board of the Sunnyside Business Improvement District, sharing her marketing expertise to bring about programs such as BID Bucks, Sunnyside Shopping Spree and Santa’s annual visit and annual toy drive to support the 108th Precinct.
• Dr. Moitri Savard of Queens West Health and Wellness. Savard is a board-certified family physician and founder of QueensWest Health and Wellness and Balance Spa in Long Island City. She opened her own office after moving to the area in 2007 with a strong belief in integrative health care. Today the QWHW sees hundreds of patients a week and offers a number of healthcare services to residents in the community.
“These women are strong members of our community who drive our local economy and improve the lives of others,” Van Bramer said. “I want to thank them for their leadership and the outstanding service they provide each and every day.”
During the event, residents also had the opportunity to pose any questions and concerns they may have in the community to the councilman and his staff.
