JetBlue’s corporate HQ is officially
open at 27-01 Queens Plaza North.
NEW YORK CITY-Long Island City got a major vote of confidence after local officials and the business community helped welcome homegrown-airline company JetBlue to its new 200,000-square-foot corporate headquarters at the Brewster Building on Wednesday. As part of the move, the company has consolidated its former Forest Hills, NY and Darien, CT offices into one location, moving 1,000 employees to the Brause Realty Inc.-owned property at 27-01 Queens Plaza North.
“JetBlue has played a huge role in making New York City the nation’s number one travel destination,” said Mayor Michael Bloomberg, at a media briefing on Thursday. “The many reasons why people come to New York as tourists on JetBlue planes also are good reasons why JetBlue is expanding its corporate headquarters here.”
JetBlue, which serves nearly 14 million annual passengers at all four area airports, is subleasing the space from MetLife, who will continue maintain a presence at the 1911-era building, which, in fact, has an aviation history of its own. The property is the same site where the Brewster Aeronautical Co. first manufactured the Brewster F2A, the first monoplane fighter airplane use by the US Navy in World War II.
After landing in LIC, JetBlue’s arrival has also brought a little bit of “green” to the neighborhood. The city also announced that “Dutch Kills Green” has been selected as the official name of the new 1.5-acre open space outside the building in Queens Plaza. The project, which broke ground in 2009, is a $45 million roadway, pedestrian and bicycle improvement program that aims to transform the primary entry point into the borough.
The improvements have also helped to drive real estate values upward. Real estate advisory firm CPEX previously told GlobeSt.com that average asking rents for class A space in Long Island City are in the mid-$30s per square foot, and will continue to inch higher as demand for space increases.
