LONG ISLAND CITY (WABC) —
A teenager is recovering in the hospital after she was struck by a stray bullet while doing her homework in Long Island City.
It was a quiet Sunday morning when 15-year-old Amy Sanchez was trying to take advantage of the peace and do her homework near a window inside her family’s apartment.
Sarah Taylor knows Amy and lives right across the hall.
“(The bullet) pierced her hand, thru the hand and skimmed her shoulder as well,” Taylor said.
Amy was rushed to the hospital, and police have been investigating ever since.
Neighborhood advocates are thankful that more than 350 security cameras are all around the area, but they have some questions they want answered such as do they work? And d id they give police a clear picture of the gunman?
“Did police look at the video and did they see it wasn’t working? The lobby door was not working in the little girl’s building. They light was out in front of her building,” one resident said.
Neighbors say they are fed up with things not working. They wonder why no one has circulated a picture of the man who was shooting.
“He was on drugs early in the morning. He was singing and just letting off shots randomly,” Taylor said.
Most of all they cannot believe children are forced to live like this and that Amy was hurt.
Sanchez remained in the hospital on Wednesday recovering from gunshot wounds to the hand and shoulder.
A meeting between the community and the police was planned for Wednesday night.
