The Garden City PTA and the School District Administration are forming a committee that will review and investigate best practices in anti-bullying techniques. Dr. Fino Celano, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel along with Dr. Rita Melikian, Director of Educational Technology will be meeting to discuss anti-bullying programs and teachings in the classroom. Administration has now asked PTA to appoint a parent representative to join the District Bully Prevention Committee.
Parents interested in this position must submit a letter outlining how they would be an asset to this committee. The PTA president will present these letters to the PTA Executive Committee. The Executive Committee will review the letter with candidates names withheld to ensure the candidate is chosen anonymously. The candidate must meet the following criteria:
- Have children who are presently attending or have attended the Garden City School District
- Be available to attend all committee meetings. Meetings will take place 3 – 4 times per year, the first meeting will take place in early November from 3:30-5:00pm, in the administration building.
- Have an open mind and be able to solicit concerns and suggestions from parents regarding bullying /anti-bullying
- Report parental concerns to the committee for discussion
- Provide committee progress reports to the PTA Executive Committee and PTA membership at School PTA meetings and forums (Primary level – High School).
Candidates interested in serving must submit their email to [email protected], no later than 12:00pm on October 29th.
This will not be the only opportunity for parental involvement in the research process. The PTA, in conjunction with the school district administration, will also work to provide committee updates at PTA meetings and at BOE meetings and also via the PTA email blasts and the local newspapers.
