The Metropolitan Transportation Authority shut down their entire system Sunday night in advance of Sandy’s arrival.
City, subway and train service was suspended at 7 p.m. Sunday.
The MTA, New York City Transit, Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North shut down their systems in preparation for Sandy.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the projected winds and storm surge means mass transit will not run for the entirety of the storm.
MTA bus service was suspended starting at 9 p.m.
Cuomo said bridges and tunnels will be closed on a case-by-case basis, but he urged New Yorkers to stay home.
He announced Monday morning that the Hugh Carey (Brooklyn Battery) Tunnel and Holland Tunnel are closing at 2 p.m. Monday.
MTA Chairman and CEO Joe Lhota said transit service will remain suspended until 12 hours after the storm ends.
The MTA also shut down ahead of Irene’s arrival last year.
The MTA took extra precautions to protect its Long Island Rail Road tunnels.
Overnight crews rolled out a 90-foot-long rubber balloon that will act as a water dam.
The dam is about five feet tall when fully inflated. It takes about 3 hours to fill the dam with 32,000 gallons of water.
National Guard troops are being deployed across the state, with 200 in New York City.
New Jersey Transit has shut down all bus, light rail and train service.
In addition, the Port Authority shut down all PATH train service starting at 12:01 a.m. Monday. All PATH stations closed at that time as well.
New Jersey Transit’s Atlantic City line closed at 4 p.m. Sunday and all other bus and light rail services were suspended at 2 a.m. Monday.
All bus carriers at the Port Authority Bus Terminal closed down by 3 a.m. Monday.
While the Port Authority has no plans to close any of the area airports, the agency said it expects all airlines to cancel their flights through Monday.
American Airlines, JetBlue and Delta plan to cancel all flights in and out of the three area airports.
Anyone with plans to fly out is urged to contact your airline for cancelations and delays.
The Port Authority says it will have personnel on hand to help stranded passengers, along with cots and food.
The AirTrain to John F. Kennedy International Airport shut down at 7 p.m. Sunday.
All Amtrak Northeast Corridor service is suspended on Monday, as is New York Waterway Ferry and Bus service.
Staten Island Ferry service and East River Ferry service are both shut down.
The Port of New York and New Jersey — consisting of Port Newark Container Terminal, Port Elizabeth Marine Terminal, Port Jersey Marine Terminal, Howland Hook Marine Terminal on Staten Island and the Brooklyn-Port Authority Marine Terminal — is closing on midnight Sunday.

Public schools in New York City are closed on Monday, and the Department of Education will determine on that day whether to close schools on Tuesday. See other school closings below.
There will be no electronic trading at the New York Stock Exchange Monday and NYSE officials say the physical trading floor and stock exchange building will be closed. The NASDAQ will also be closed.
The Office of Court Administration says all state courts will be closed Monday, except for arraignments and emergency applications. Jurors should not come to the courts.
The courthouses in the Southern District of New York will also be closed Monday.
NYU Langone Medical Center is not evacuating but it is canceling all surgeries and medical procedures, except for emergency procedures.

All film permits for Sunday night, Monday and Tuesday were revoked by city officials.
All Sunday night and Monday night Broadway performances are canceled, as is Monday’s performance of “Avenue Q.” Telecharge, Ticketmaster and theater box offices are offering refunds, depending on the show.
A fundraiser for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS called “Broadway Scares,” which was originally scheduled for 9 p.m., is being postponed.
Several Carnegie Hall performances for Sunday and Monday are being canceled or rescheduled. Visit carnegiehall.org for details.
The Metropolitan Opera has also canceled its Monday night performance of “The Marriage Of Figaro.” Tickets are being exchanged.
A Barclays Center concert on Monday featuring Journey was canceled.
The U.S. Postal Service is making deliveries and closing post offices on a case-by-case basis.
There will be no Monday trash pick-ups in Zone A areas and everywhere else will be on a case-by-case basis, according to OEM officials.
The Department Of Education’s public and charter schools are closed on Monday.
