Federal officials this week announced the new Long Island City offices of the Social Security Administration (SSA) will be open to the public as of November 29.
Officials signed-off last fall, on an agreement to lease a portion of the ground floor at the Alma Corporate Headquarters at 31-10 37th Ave. in Long Island City, incorporating the agency’s former Steinway Street and Queens Plaza offices.
Developer Alma Realty completed renovations on the former warehouse building in early 2007. Restorations included extending the building from three to five stories, installing an elevator and underground parking facility.
With the addition of the two floors, the building offers 100,000 square feet of space, approximately 22,000 square feet per floor. The building, located in the heart of the Dutch Kills community, extends from 31st Street to 32nd Street on 37th Avenue in Long Island City.
Entrances to the SSA offices are clearly marked by awnings displaying the agency name. The location provides 17 service windows for walk-in clients and those with appointments, the spokesperson said. Two managers and two client aides will also be on hand to assist the public Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (days and times subject to change.)
The new location is located just one block from the N and R elevated subway lines and the Q 102 bus (31st Street) stops directly outside the office entrance. Limited parking in an underground facility is also available for seniors and others visiting the new SSA offices.
