HATCH Theatre stands for Hysterical Astoria Theatre Community Happenings. They are a theatre organization for children, ages five to 16, in Long Island City. They offer classes in acting, improvisation, directing, auditioning and more, taught by a team of professionals in the field. Their stated mission is to create a space where children can explore their creativity, express their voices, gain self-confidence, laugh and play. They believe that at a time when society is immersed in technology, the art of theatre is more important than ever. Theatre programs like HATCH Theatre nourish and preserve critical communication skills, helping to build a bigger community and a more successful future for their students.
HATCH Theatre calls itself a sanctuary for silliness. Far too often in the competitive world of entertainment, kids lose their hold on being kids. They want to promote the fun side of theatre, empowering students to let loose and be themselves in a non-competitive environment all while instilling values of mutual respect and showmanship.
The Chain Theatre is the official headquarters for HATCH Theatre. All classes and performances will be held in their newly renovated space, located at 21-28 45th Rd., Long Island City, a few steps from the Court Square subway station.
HATCH is run by co-founders and instructors Sara Conte, a freelance casting director and acting coach with six years of experience; and Amanda Thompson, an award winning director and teaching artist.
In addition to the aforementioned classes in acting, directing, and improvisation, they offer scene study and private coaching sessions. Currently, they are running HATCH Kids Theatre Camp, geared toward kids ages eight to 13, which runs for seven Saturdays, starting March 16 until May 4 (excluding March 30). The classes include improv games, acting technique, directing technique, and scene study. There will be a Final Showcase on Saturday, May 4, where friends and family can come and see what the students have worked on. The tuition of $175 includes the showcase and a one-time registration fee of $25; there is a discount for siblings.
