One-of-a-kind in LIC: Aerial Play this Weekend in Long Island City

*Genesis: An Aerial Play* On March 22 and March 23, 2013, *Genesis, *a new play by Julia Kaminsky, directed by Toby Vera Bercovici, and choreographed by Madeline Hoak will be performed for the first time at Circus Warehouse in Long Island City. *Genesis* is an aerial comedy that twists the biblical creation story into a satirical acrobatic convergence of the sacred and the profane. After Adam and Eve’s fling fizzles, God—an insecure, stilt-wearing ruler—tries to seduce Eve, a smart and ethical attorney visiting from Venus. Rivalries and conflicts in Edenopolis begin to mount, and when Eve makes a shocking discovery, she must take matters into her own hands to save life on earth. The play incorporates wit, aerial arts, hip hop and modern dance, in an aesthetic that is at once lyrical and absurd. The Garden of Eden, with its vines, fruits, trees, animals and humans, is a setting in which different forms of movement, circus, and aerials are merged with the plot: the birds fly through the sky, the fish slither on the ground contorting. At certain points, the movement is poignant. At other moments, such as Adam and Eve’s airborne sexual encounters, it is comedic. Aesthetically and conceptually, the piece is an aerial and dramatic collage that intermixes characters from the Bible with a myriad of contemporary references. Many of these references are outlandish, woven into the plot to create a hilarious spectacle of the absurd. Others touch on deeper issues of our time: science vs. religion and gender relations in both the Bible and contemporary society.
