Track work will cause some peak-period service disruptions on the Long Island Rail Road this summer. Newsday says the LIRR will cancel three morning rush-hour trains and two evening rush-hour trains from July 19 to Aug. 19. Crews will be doing the track work in Long Island City, Queens. It’s near the East River tunnels that lead to Penn Station in Manhattan. The major junction is also is used by Amtrak, New Jersey Transit and a freight carrier, New York Atlantic. LIRR President Helena Williams says the project will create a straight pathway so trains can access Penn Station more efficiently.
