Residents of Long Island City will rally Wednesday to demand more stop signs, speed bumps and better enforcement of traffic laws to increase pedstrian safety in the increasingly residential Dutch Kills area.
The high-traffic neighborhood near Northern Blvd. and the entrance to the Queensboro Bridge is dangerous for pedestrians and a high risk for traffic accidents, say members of the local civic association. Their were seven fatal pedestrian accidents in the area between 1995 and 2009, statistics show.

“Too many accidents have occurred due to traffic planning that has not kept up with increased strains on our infrastructure,” said state Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Long Island City), who will join the residents at 39th Ave. and 29th St. “Immediate action needs to be taken to make our streets safer.”
The population of the area is still low, but it has grown nearly 9% since 2000 — and a spate of coming residential developments promises to inflate that number even more.
