Long Island City, NY: The greenmarket that was once located at 48th Avenue and Vernon Boulevard made a comeback on Saturday.
The new market, which is operating on the same corner, is open on Saturdays from 9:00am to 4:00pm from now through Nov. 23. It offers the same fresh fruits and vegetables found at more than 50 GrowNYC farmers markets across the city.
GrowNYC operated a greenmarket at this location until 2010. However, the market closed due to poor sales.
Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer and other Long Island City leaders have been working with GrowNYC to bring the market back.
This market is a GrowNYC Youthmarket, where the operators are working with the LIC YMCA to recruit and train teens from the neighborhood to help run it.
The youth market program is viewed by GrowNYC as an innovative way to provide Western Queens residents access to fresh, healthy, locally grown produce while training local teens how to run a small business and become future entrepreneurs.
