More bike lanes are coming to Queens, the city said Thursday night.
The city will build more controversial bike lanes to accommodate a growing number of cyclists in northwestern Queens.
City officials told Community Board 2 on Thursday night that new bike routes are slated to be installed in 2014 Sunnyside and Long Island City.
Roads designated for the shared and buffered bike lanes include portions of 11th St., 39th St., 49th Ave. and busy Skillman Ave.
The Department of Transportation chose the lanes after meeting with local cyclists and board members and analyzing the width of the streets and how heavily trafficked they are, agency officials said.
“What we’re focusing on is creating north-south connections and east-west connections,” said Inbar Kishoni, a project manager at the agency’s bike program.
Board Chairman Joe Conley asked the city to also install bike parking in cyclist-friendly Long Island City.
Agency officials said they would look into finding potential locations.
Little controversy revealed itself at the meeting, but prior announcements of new bike lanes — especially in car-dependent areas such as southern Brooklyn have met with serious community opposition. And even in bike-friendly Park Slope, a city path on Prospect Park West was the subject of bitter fights and a lawsuit.
