Filling the muni meter wasn’t enough in one area of Long Island City where drivers said they were getting taken for a ride until they contacted NY1 For You. NY1’s Susan Jhun filed the following report.
“It’s an all out assault, we have people in here that have 90 tickets, 100 tickets in a matter of five or six months,” said Matthew Schultz, a sales associate at Harley Davidson.
That was a month ago, when employees at Harley Davidson on Northern Boulevard in Long Island City said parking in the one-hour muni meter spots almost guaranteed them a ticket.
“The muni meter, which is about a half-a-block away and this is a long block, is generally broken 50 percent of the time and to walk to the other muni meter could take you a good five minutes. So by the time you start walking to that one, all the way back to the other one they’ll be here and ticket you,” said Schultz.
Tickets that would get dismissed 90 percent of the time according to the drivers who fought them, which is confirmation to the drivers that they were unfair to begin with.
“We’ve called 3-1-1, we’ve called traffic command, we’ve called the precinct, we get nothing,” said John Maguire, general sales manager at Harley Davidson.
At the time, NY1 called the NYPD and after looking into the situation a spokesman told us the supervisor that oversees the area was spoken to regarding the parking situation and the proper procedure for issuing summons to vehicles violating the muni meter parking regulations.
Action that drivers say has made a difference. Now a month later, employees at Harley Davidson say they haven’t received any unfair tickets and hope the fair treatment continues.
