This would send shivers down any spine.
A student’s threat to shoot up Long Island City High School with an assault rifle prompted tightened security after a teacher discovered a chilling message etched on a classroom desk Wednesday.
“Tomorrow, June 12, there will be a shooting in the school with an AK-47 and a 9-mm,” the ominous note read, according to police, who were alerted by education officials after a teacher discovered the foreboding missive in Room 567.
There were no incidents at the school the next day, but cops say a 34-year-old father pulled his son out that morning after he received an alarming phone call from someone threatening to kill the Long Island City student if he didn’t get $500.
It is unclear if the two threats were connected.
School security officers searched students’ bags upon arrival Thursday and metal detectors were put in place Friday, said Department of Education spokeswoman Marge Feinberg. Extra security guards were also brought in and police presence was beefed up, shaken students said.
“There were, like, five cop cars circling around (Friday),” said Fawzia Akhter, 15, a sophomore at the school. “If you heard there may be a shooting, you would be scared, too.”
Seniors, who celebrated the year’s end with a school barbecue Friday, said they expected traditional antics from their prankster peers — but none of this nature.
“I thought it was a senior prank. But even if it was a prank, it went too far,” said Hardeep Singh, 17. “They don’t know the repercussions. Look at other shootings. It caused the same fear.”
A teenager armed with an assault rifle opened fire in an Oregon high school’s gym locker room Tuesday, fatally shooting a 14-year-old and wounding a teacher before killing himself.
It was the 74th shooting at a U.S. school since the 2012 Sandy Hook massacre.
“It freaked me out a little bit,” Kayla, a senior who did not want to give her last name, said of the school threat.
“I walked into school and saw a lot of cops yesterday. I was a little nervous,” she added. “When I found out why they were there, I was like, ‘That’s crazy.’”
