We’re down to the final four in the Curbed Cup, our annual award to the New York City neighborhood of the year. There will be one matchup today and tomorrow, with the polls left open for 24 hours. The final showdown for the prestigious fake trophy will begin Wednesday. Let the eliminations continue!
The Financial District has rolled through the Curbed Cup so far, defeating Ridgewood and Flatiron, and now it faces what might be its toughest challenge yet. It will rely once again on the development at the World Trade Center site, where the long-anticipated 1 World Trade Center and 4 World Trade Center both opened their doors, along with the 9/11 Museum and Fulton Center, and ballyhooed “bird in flight” rafters were installed on Santiago Calatrava’s Transportation Hub. The neighborhood, not typically lauded for its housing stock, is also getting some very pricey residential conversions at the Woolworth building, the Verizon building, and Temple Court.
Long Island City had an even tougher road to the Final Four, having to defeat South Williamsburg and early favorite 57th Street to make it here. Though the destruction of graffiti mecca 5Pointz may not count as a point in its favor, it’s impossible to deny that development is on the rise in the Queens neighborhood. Plans were unveiled for the borough’s future tallest tower, a glassy tower-y thing at 42-12 28th Street, and a slew of waterfront developments continue to increase the housing stock and push up the line on what people are willing to pay to live in Queens.
