A cyclist is in critical condition after getting hit by an allegedly drunk driver in Long Island City yesterday.
According to the Daily News, the 35-year-old driver rammed his black Mercedes into the back of the cyclist’s bike as he was riding along Queens Plaza North near 29th Street around 2:15 p.m.
The cyclist was rushed to New York-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Hospital, where he is in critical condition. His name has not been released, though the tabloid reports that he’s in his mid-20s.
Witnesses told DNAinfo that following the crash, the cyclist appeared to have a seizure before he stopped moving. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.
A passenger in the Mercedes—39-year-old Shann Mon—told the news site that the cyclist had darted into northbound traffic.
“I’m sitting there, I see this kid coming and he hits the car,” he said. “I was shocked.”
The driver was taken in for questioning, but an NYPD spokesperson did not have information on any pending charges when contacted this morning. Police sources tell the News the driver “was expected to be charged with driving under the influence.”
