Councilman Jimmy Van Bramer will be hosting a town hall meeting in Long Island City Wednesday as he aims to bring together activists and local groups opposed to President Donald Trump’s policies.
The event, dubbed Resistance Town Hall, will take place at MoMA PS1 at 7 p.m. and will be similar to Van Bramer’s Speak Out that he held in Sunnyside following the election.
The Sunnyside event saw hundreds of people come together to share concerns about then President-elect Donald Trump.
The participating organizations at tomorrow night’s event will include immigration groups speaking on what to do if there are ICE raids in the neighborhood, as well as other activist organizations and groups that have cropped up since the election, looking at issues ranging from women’s rights, race, immigration, climate change, and more.
“When our values are under attack, we must come together as one voice and resist,” Van Bramer said yesterday in a statement.
“From our march over the Queensboro Bridge to our Rally Against Hate at the Museum of the Moving Image, I’m proud of Queens for sending a strong message of resistance. On Wednesday, our town hall will bring together concerned neighbors, community groups, including some formed in the wake of the election, and immigration attorneys to share ideas and plan a path forward to protect ourselves and our neighbors.”
The town hall will give each group a chance to speak and answer questions from participants, and Van Bramer hopes that people will be able to share strategies, resources, and plan future actions.
“Together, we’ll continue to fight and stand strong for our #QueensValues!” reads the Facebook event for the town hall.
The town hall event follows in a series of actions Van Bramer has taken since Trump was elected under the theme of #QueensValues, including a march across Queensboro Bridge to Trump Tower, the speak out, and an immigration rally at the Museum of the Moving Image He Will Not Divide Us video installation, which was taken down last week.
