A quarrel between a state prison guard and her ex-boyfriend ended in an attempted murder and suicide this morning, police said.
A female correction officer, whose name has yet to be released, and her ex-boyfriend got into an argument at 6:30 am outside the Queensboro Correctional Facility, located at 47-07 Van Dam Street, that ended with her chasing him down the street and firing rounds at him as he attempted to flee to his car.
She then turned the gun on herself and shot herself in the torso. She was declared dead at Elmhurst Hospital. Her ex-boyfriend was uninjured.
“This morning there was a tragic incident outside of the Queensboro Correctional Facility involving two correction officers,” Department of Corrections and Community Spokesperson Thomas Mailey said in a statement. “At no time was security to the facility breached. As a precaution, the facility is operating on a modified schedule. The department is assisting the New York City Police Department in its investigation.”
Rafael Macias, of Ozone Park, was a witness to the incident, whose car was struck by a bullet.
Macias said he was driving with his friends to work when he pulled up to the stop sign at 31st Place and suddenly saw a woman in a prison guard uniform shooting at a man.
Macias said he initially thought she was a police officer but soon realized that wasn’t the case. “She didn’t say ‘Stop this is the police’ or have any backup,” he said.
He heard the bullets and felt one touch his car. He shouted to his friends in the car: “Get down, get down
