South Street Seaport gets a speakeasy
South Street Seaport has rebranded itself to Seaport District NYC, an identity change that brought a slew of new dining options like a rotating chef pop-up and outdoor bar. Next up is Mr. Cannon, a “speakeasy” now open daily from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. at 206 Front Street with throwback cocktails, like the 1817 Martini with grapefruit-infused dry gin, dry vermouth, and maraschino liqueur, in a pretty plush setting.
Blue Ribbon Sushi set to rock Rockefeller Center
Blue Ribbon Sushi Bar’s next location is Rockefeller Center’s concourse level, opening in early August with both sit-down and grab-and-go options. There’s no exact debut date quite yet, but expect all-day options — including happy hour and, perplexingly, breakfast.
All-cream cheese bakery opens Thursday
Cream cheese will get its full due this Thursday, July 27 when Becky’s Bites, an all-cream cheese bakery, opens (with shortened hours just that day) at 122 East Seventh Street. The menu will feature desserts like red velvet cookie sandwiches, cappuccino chocolate bites, and “Beckaroos,” or Teddy Graham cookies with vanilla funfetti dip.
33 Greenwich adds brunch
Now that it’s been open for almost four months, West Village Southern spot 33 Greenwich has added brunch to its repertoire. The menu — in full below — has on-brand dishes like a fried chicken and beignet platter, praline cinnamon rolls, and short rib cauliflower hash. Brunch happens weekends from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
A Dale Talde-style lobster shack party this weekend
Anyone with Hamptons FOMO can instead go to chef Dale Talde’s lobster shack pop-up at Barlo Terrace in the Arlo Nomad Hotel (11 East 31st Street). Lobster rolls, chilled lobster, chilled peel-and-eat shrimp, and more are all on the two-hour, unlimited food and drink $65-per-person menu. It’s on Saturday, July 29 at 12 p.m. or 2 p.m. Call (212) 951-1141 for a reservation.
New hot pot and KBBQ spot in the East Village
37 Saint Mark’s Place is now home to 99 Favor Taste, a Korean barbecue and Chinese hot pot restaurant with locations in the Lower East Side, Flushing, Sunset Park, and New Jersey. All-you-can-eat is the deal here, with $31 max nabbing a proper feast. It’s free on a birthday!
Taste Talks tickets up for grabs
The Brooklyn edition of Taste Talks — that annual festival that explores the future of food — is back. This year, chefs like Wylie Dufresne, Andrew Cardellini, Floyd Cardoz, Dale Talde, Greg Baxtrom, and more are all participating. It’s happening September 8 to 10, and tickets just went on sale here.
A Long Island City restaurant update
Coming soon to Long Island City are three new restaurants: Top Chef Season 7 runner-up Ed Cotton is opening at 47-25 Vernon Boulevard; Argentinian restaurant R40 is headed to 47-16 Vernon Boulevard; and Williamsburg’s Black Star Bakery is expanding to 2-10 50th Avenue.
Village Pourhouse may owe quite a bit of back rent
Village Pourhouse in the East Village may be gone, but its drama is not. According to a sign on the front door, the landlord is demanding $65,046.29, or two months plus legal fees, in back rent. Reportedly Ainsworth is eyeing the space next.
Doughnut-stuffed ice cream can’t be stopped
Looks like New York’s next novelty ice cream will be stuffed doughnuts, which look like ice cream-stuffed doughnut paninis. Come Saturday, July 29, Stuffed will open at 139 First Avenue. If that’s simply too long to wait, here’s some rolled ice cream available right now in Chinatown:
