LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — A Queens neighborhood best known for its exploding population and burgeoning art scene will soon get a condominium to accommodate both.
Galerie, an 11-story complex going up in Long Island City, is slated to bring 182 brand new condos and its own art program to its address at 22-18 Jackson Ave.
The development being built across from the MoMa PS1 museum will display local artwork selling for anywhere from $275 to $10,000 as part of its ArtBox program, a spokeswoman told Patch. Pieces up for sale will adorn Galerie’s lobby and neighboring sales gallery in a rotating art exhibit, and most can be bought directly from the artist.
“Art and artful living have been paramount to us in every aspect of design and development for Galerie,” said Omri Sachs, founder of its developer Adam America Real Estate.
“Long Island City is an artistic enclave unto its own, and we wanted to celebrate and help promote local artists both within the building’s own spaces and for public viewing.”
Galerie isn’t slated to open until mid-2019, but its first ArtBox exhibit is already on display in the sales gallery at 22-22 Jackson Ave., the spokeswoman said. It showcases work from more than 20 artists – eight of whom are based in Long Island City.
Participating artists listed on Galerie’s website include: Christopher Spinelli, Cara Lynch, Kyoko Takei, Miya Ando, Fei Li, Monica Delgado, Preston Trombly, Ann Cofta and Nancy Gesimondo.
And there’s more art to be found outside Galerie’s gallery. The 13,000-square-foot condominium will feature a concrete, brick and glass facade. Its indoor pool will open onto a courtyard centered around a curvilinear sculpture made by Allen Glatter.
Galerie will offer a mix of studio through three-bedroom apartments. Other building amenities include a fitness center, party room, children’s playroom, pet spa, rooftop terrace and library stocked with reading material from the MoMa PS1 bookstore.
