Long overdue Queens public library grand opening delayed yet again due to construction – WABC

LONG ISLAND CITY, Queens (WABC) —

People living in one Queens neighborhood are furious over a public library project that has been riddled with delays.

Crews broke ground on Hunters Point Library in Long Island City nearly two years ago, but the grand opening has been pushed back several times and is now slated for August 2019.

“It’s like a glacier moving, but even slower,” New York City Council member Jimmy Van Bramer said.

He has worked on the project from the start, roughly 20 years, and he blames the contractor, Triton Structural, for all of the setbacks.

“The Department of Design and Construction and the people who are being paid to do this work have fallen down,” Van Bramer said.

The DDC oversees the effort and told Eyewitness News they’re working with the contractor to help them complete the roughly $40 million project, double the original price tag.

LIC United, made up of several civic groups in the neighborhood, sent a petition to Mayor Bill de Blasio demanding, among other things, the city do a top-to-bottom review of things and give the group regular updates.

“When my 7-year-old son was born, I used to joke that he would be in elementary school before the library is open,” library advocate Meghan Cirrito said. “He starts second grade in the fall.”

When finished, the 22,000 square foot library, located along the waterfront, will feature a rooftop cafe and seating area, bamboo ceilings and grand windows.

MUGSHOTS: 22 arrested in Queensbridge Houses drug bust – WABC

LONG ISLAND CITY, Queens (WABC) —

Almost two dozen people face drug and weapons charges after a drug bust at the Queensbridge Houses in Long Island City, the NYPD announced Thursday.

Following an 11-month-long undercover investigation dubbed “Operation: The Bridge Is Over,” the NYPD executed nine search warrants and arrested 22 people, NYPD Deputy Inspector Donald Boller said.

The suspects are accused of selling narcotics, including heroin and crack cocaine, and police also said they seized four firearms during the investigation.

Police said they started investigating the Queensbridge House, New York City’s largest public housing development, after noticing an uptick in violence. Since August 2017, five people were shot in and around the development.
The suspects were identified as:

— Shalonda Anderson, 49, of Long Island City, is charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
— Nathaniel Artis, 41, of Long Island City, is charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.

— Julie Benjamin, 20, of Long Island City, is charged with third-degree criminal possession of a firearm.
— Xena Benjamin, 22, of Long Island City, is charged with third-degree criminal possession of a weapon.
— Priscilla Carbajal, 26, of Jackson Heights, is charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
— Jondell Harley, 31, of Long Island City, is charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.
— Anthony Johnson, 55, of Long Island City, is charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.
— Darren Joseph, 52, of Jackson Heights, is charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.

— Robert Little-John, 20, of Long Island City, is charged with fourth-degree sale of marijuana.
— Harold Martin, 66, of Long Island City, is charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.
— Dawn Muhammad, 53, of Long Island City, is charged with third-degree criminal sale of a controlled substance.
— Nathaniel Newell, 30, of Long Island City, is charged with seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance.

Wake Forest assistant basketball coach arrested after single punch kills marketing exec in NY

Jamill Jones, an assistant basketball coach at Wake Forest University, faces assault charges related to the death of Sandor Szabo, the Associated Press reports. Jones turned himself into police on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to the charge of misdemeanor assault.

Just after 1 o’clock on Sunday morning, Sandor Szabo left his brother’s hotel room in Long Island City, Queens and stepped out into the night. The 35-year-old Florida resident had attended his stepsister’s wedding earlier in the day, his family told the New York Daily News, and was trying to find his way back to his own hotel with a dead cellphone battery.

Instead, he ended up sprawled across the sidewalk of an unfamiliar city. Two days later, he died of his injuries.

In a bulletin issued Monday, the New York Police Department wrote that an unidentified individual in a white SUV had punched Szabo in the face “following a confrontation.” Szabo fell backward, hitting his head against the concrete pavement. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition.

Dominic Szabo, 33, told the Daily News on Monday that his brother had knocked on the window of the parked SUV, likely because he thought it was an Uber or a cab. Police also told the paper that Szabo may have been drunk at the time.

On Thursday, the New York Post reported that Szabo had banged on multiple cars’ windows, and had punched a local resident who came outside to confront him about the disturbance.

The driver of the white SUV, who police believe was Jones, got out of the car and punched Szabo.

An anonymous 17-year-old witness told PIX 11 on Wednesday that he helped the SUV’s driver to prop Szabo upright before the ambulance came, so that he would stop choking on his own blood. But before the paramedics showed up, the driver had fled the scene.

The charges against Jones may be upgraded if the medical examiner determines that the punch led to Szabo’s death, the New York Post reported Thursday.

Considered a rising star in the world of college basketball, Jones had previous coaching stints at the University of Central Florida, Virginia Commonwealth University, and Florida Gulf Coast University, according to ESPN. He joined the staff at Wake Forest in 2017.

Jones’ lawyer, Alain Messena, told the AP that what happened was “a tragic accident, and Mr. Jones and his family send their deepest condolences and their thoughts and prayers to the Szabo family.”

On Tuesday, CBS 12 reported that Szabo had died. His employer, What If Media Group, confirmed the news on Wednesday morning.

“Sandor was a well-known and well-respected leader in the digital marketing industry,” the company wrote in a Facebook post. “He lived in Boca Raton with his brother, but spent a lot of time in our Fort Lee, N.J. office. He was critical in helping our company’s recent rapid growth, and was very proud that we were selected as one of the fastest growing companies on the Inc 5000.”

Szabo was “always upbeat, positive, kind and caring,” and had loved fishing and cooking, the post said.

According to Szabo’s LinkedIn profile, he received a bachelor’s degree from DeVry University in Raleigh, North Carolina in 2009 and had held a variety of sales and marketing jobs in Florida and North Carolina before being hired as the VP of Sales for What If Media Group. He also listed volunteer positions with Forgotten Soldiers Outreach, Inc., a Florida group that sends care packages to military service members, and the Making Magic Alliance, a North Carolina-based organization that provided summer camp scholarships to underprivileged children.

His family has yet to comment publicly on his death, but his brother told the Daily News on Monday that Szabo was “the most loving and kind individual anyone could have as a friend.”

With crime at a record low in New York City, the seemingly random act of violence shocked some residents of Long Island City, which is usually associated with glassy apartment towers and rapid development. The real estate website StreetEasy describes the neighborhood as “sterile” and “corporate,” a haven for young professionals seeking luxury housing.

“Never in a million years thought that would’ve happened, especially over here,” James Hall, a neighborhood resident, told CBS12.

The NYPD’s 108th Precinct, which covers Long Island City, reported zero murders last year — a significant drop from 1990, when 16 people were killed. But not everyone feels secure.

“Our road is basically new hotel, new hotel, then abandoned places, so it’s just a process of gentrification and converting,” Cloe Lui, who lives in the area, said to CBS New York. “It’ll take some time to be more safe.”

Get Solar Power To 1M Houses By 2023, Queens Advocates Urge State

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — The sun that fueled a warm summer afternoon as it blazed down onto Hunters Point South Park is the same source of energy that advocates argue could power more than a million homes across New York.

Surrounded by families basking in the sunlight, Queens advocates gathered at the Long Island City waterfront park Tuesday to rally support for the “Million Solar Strong New York” campaign, which aims to power 1 million New York homes – including 100,000 that are low-income – with solar energy by 2023.

Campaign organizers called on Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other state lawmakers to help them reach that goal.

“We need programs and policies to make solar power accessable to all people – regardless of their income level, housing and neighborhood – across New York State,” said campaign organizer Renee Vogolsang.

Advocates were joined by Queens lawmakers and Long Island-based solar company EmPower, which recently expanded into Queens to fix the borough’s “run down” and “destroyed” energy infrastructure,” said CEO David Schieren.

“It’s a lot of hard work, but we do see this future where we have a much better energy system completely powered by solar and wind and batteries that is completely free of fossil fuels,” Schieren said.

“We’re going to make it happen.”

Schieren said his company – which sells, installs and operates solar power systems – recently received more state funds to offer bigger rebates to New York City homeowners and businesses. That’s in addition to tax credits and incentives the city recently extended for homeowners who install solar panels and other infrastructure.

“Are we better off than we were last year? Yes,” Schieren said.

But local lawmakers acknowledged the city has a ways to go in creating solar developments.

The City Council in April requested Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office set aside nearly $800 million of the 2019 fiscal budget to speed up solar development, noting the city was behind on its “One City: Built to Last” plan, which mandates the installation of 100 megawatts of solar on buildings by 2025.

“We’ve done a lot but we can absolutely do more, and i think that’s why we worked so hard in the city budget to push this,” said City Councilman Costa Constantinides (D-Astoria).

“We want to make sure (solar installations) in private spaces are incentivized, but on the same token we want to get our city on building more with solar – Schools, libraries, hospitals.”

Constantinides noted the Million Solar Strong Campaign could improve air quality at several public housing complexes in western Queens, where asthma rates are higher than the borough’s average. Building solar infrastructure would also create more middle-class jobs and line the pockets of homeowners have panels installed, he said.

“This is a win-win for everybody,” he said.

New York Sen. Michael Gianaris (D-Astoria) also pledged his support for the campaign on a state level, where organizers hope to see most of the solar energy reform.

“It’s a beautiful day,” Gianaris said. “Let’s make use of the natural energy that the sun provides.

“We’ve done so much already, but we can do better.”

Man critically injured in hit-and-run with dump truck in Queens – WABC

LONG ISLAND CITY, Queens (WABC) —

Police are investigating a hit-and-run involving a dump truck that left a pedestrian in critical condition.

The incident was reported just before 2 p.m. on Tuesday in Long Island City.

The 46-year-old man was crossing Northern Boulevard when he was struck by a red commercial dump truck going west, police said.

The vehicle fled the location and the victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The vehicle was tracked to New Jersey and detectives are on their way to interview the driver.

They are trying to determine whether it was an accident and whether the driver was unaware he had struck a pedestrian.

On Aug. 12, foodies from around the city went the The Foundry to take part in the annual Secret Summer cocktail festival. Now in its fourth year, the sold-out party is the country’s only “Farm-to-Bar” cocktail festival, celebrating sustainable mixology, fresh eats, music, art, dance, fashion and more.

Produced by Tyler Hollinger of HighLife Productions, Andrew Maturana from RAPT NY and Alison DuVal from The Foundry, the festival offered a number of refreshing beverages made with quality ingredients. Guests kept cool throughout the event with cocktails, including Rose Spritzers from Hangar 1 Vodka, Spicy Mai Tais and Charred Cherry Highballs from Brugal 1888, summer beers from Blue Point Brewery and other specialty cocktails from Brockmans Gin and Tanteo Tequila.

Casey Webb, host of “Man v. Food” on the Travel Channel, was in attendance and awarded Suntory Whisky Toki the best cocktail medal for their Toki Twilight. The cocktail, which was available throughout the evening, is made with the Japanese blended whisky, sparkling sake, sustainably grown citrus, green tea and Pepquino syrup.

Guest also enjoyed food provided by Wisefish Poke, Mama’s Margarita Salsa, The Choripan, Sophie’s Cuban, Areppas, San Matteo, My/Mo Mochi Ice Cream and Van Leeuwen.

To keep the guests entertained, musical acts such as Sitar Tabla and Moon Hooch took the stage and performed. The rest of the entertainment lineup included DJ Kieren Taylor, Hungry March Band and Kaoro Wantanabe Taiko Drums. The Uprooted Flower Truck was parked at the event and sold handmade flower crowns to guests.

Uber and Lyft Drivers Rush to Register Cars Ahead of City’s New Cap

In the pouring rain, hundreds of people lined up outside a building in Queens on Monday, clutching umbrellas and paperwork. The frenzy was not driven by a buzzy new restaurant or a new Apple store. Instead the line led to an Uber office and was prompted by the City Council’s recent decision to limit ride-hail apps by imposing a cap on new vehicle licenses.

For hours, drivers waited outside the building in Long Island City for Uber workers to let them in and to register their cars as for-hire vehicles before the legislation goes into effect. Mayor Bill de Blasio has said he is planning to sign the bill into law on Tuesday.

Mohammed Kabir, 47, a driver from Queens, said he spent four hours before emerging from Uber’s office with his paperwork in order. He said he had arrived at 7 a.m., hoping to beat the crowd, and despite the long wait he said he was content that he now had what he needed to beat the deadline.

Since the Council’s vote on the new regulations, which includes establishing a minimum pay rate, Uber had been encouraging existing drivers and others who wanted to become drivers for the tech giant to make sure they applied for the special license plates needed to register private cars as ride-hail vehicles. Once the legislation becomes law, no new licenses, with the exception of wheelchair accessible vehicles, will be granted for a year while the city studies the impact of the ride-hail industry.

Some drivers waited for almost two hours before being shepherded inside. Red Ferhani, 32, said he had been driving for Uber for almost three years by renting cars from other Uber drivers. Tired of losing part of his profit to rental fees, Mr. Ferhani said he wanted to register his own vehicle while he still could.

“I guess everybody’s doing this last minute,” said Mr. Ferhani as he approached the front of the line. Despite the hassle, Mr. Ferhani said he supported the cap.

“I think there’s enough Uber cars out there, it’s already enough,” he said.

Some drivers at Uber’s offices said they had not had enough time to get their documents and licensing fees in order. To register a car as a for-hire vehicle, owners must complete an online application with the city’s Taxi and Limousine Commission, have commercial insurance for their car and pay a $550 to $625 fee, depending on their car’s mileage.

Deniz Osor, 37, was in line only because his friend had warned him days before that the window to apply was closing. Mr. Osor scrambled to get his paperwork in order.

“They should’ve actually extended the time for at least another two weeks,” Mr. Osor said.

Alix Anfang, a spokeswoman for Uber, said the City Council and Mr. de Blasio had rushed the cap through “without stopping to think about the consequences for hard-working drivers who have been saving up to get out of a rental and into a car they own.”

Jose Reyes, an Uber driver from Brooklyn, said he knew people who bought cars in order to register them before the cap was passed.

Uber had prepared for the surge of drivers to its New York offices by shifting employees from New Jersey and Connecticut and opening their doors an hour early. Despite the extra hands, applicants said they were expecting the process to take two to three hours. The usual wait time in the Queens office, according to an Uber worker, is usually 20 minutes.

Frustrated with how slow the line was on Sunday, Syed Hassan, an Uber driver, left after an hour.

The line, he said, went around the building. “There were more than 1,000” drivers waiting, he estimated. Still, he returned on Monday with a friend to keep him company.

The crowd on Monday was smaller, but that did not make it any less hectic. Uber workers admonished drivers to stay in an orderly line. Once inside, drivers were directed to the second floor where they were given instructions, depending on the stage of their applications.

Some drivers, after seeing the long list of requirements, decided to wait until the cap is lifted before registering their car. Diakanke Bah, 28, was on her way out after being told that she would probably not meet the deadline since she still had to get a for-hire driver’s license.

“If I do get my license, I will have to probably rent out someone who has already registered with the T.L.C., but it won’t be with my car,” she said.

Basketball Coach Busted In Punch That Killed Queens Tourist: NYPD

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — A North Carolina college basketball coach could face murder charges after he allegedly punched a tourist in Long Island City who later died from his injuries, police said Friday.

Jamill Jones, a 35-year-old assistant coach at Wake Forest University, pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge after he was arrested Thursday evening for punching Sandor Szabo, who was in town from Florida for a family wedding, authorities said. Jones was released on his own recognizance after a brief court hearing.

By Friday morning, police had deemed the fatal blow a homicide. The investigation is ongoing, and charges against Jones could be upgraded.

Jones and Szabo butted heads Sunday morning outside the hotel Szabo’s brother was staying on 29th Street near 41st Avenue after the 35-year-old Boca Raton man mistook Jones’ car for his Uber and knocked on the glass, according to police and reports from WPEC-TV.

Jones allegedly got out of his car and punched Szabo in the face, causing him to fall back and hit his head on the pavement, police said.

An unconscious Szabo was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition, police said. The blow fractured the left side of his face and caused bleeding to his brain, and he died Tuesday afternoon after being taken off life support.

Jones turned himself in to police Thursday evening alongside his attorney, who called the incident a “tragic accident,” the Associated Press reported.

Jones joined Wake Forest’s coaching staff in 2017 after stints at University of Central Florida, Virginia Commonwealth University and Florida Gulf Coast. He started his career working with the Team Takeover AAU program in Washington D.C. after graduating from Arkansas Tech University, where he played college basketball.

Szabo, a marketing guru, was described as “super, outgoing, friendly, and an incredibly smart businessman,” in a Facebook post by What If Media Group, where he was one of 25 employees.

The digital marketing company described Szabo “a well-known and well-respected leader” who was critical to their growth and called his death “a devastating loss” for both his family and coworkers.

“He was part of our family,” the post read. “We are all deeply saddened by this loss…His beautiful spirit and his love of life will remain with us. We are going to miss him dearly.”

Tourist Dies After He Was Attacked In Long Island City: Report

LONG ISLAND CITY, QUEENS — A 35-year-old tourist from Florida has died after he was attacked in Long Island City, according to police and news reports.

Sabor Szabo, of Boca Raton, succumbed to injuries from an assault that happened early Sunday morning while he was visiting New York for a family wedding, WPEC-TV reported Tuesday.

Szabo was leaving the hotel where his brother was staying on 29th Street near 41st Avenue at about 1:15 a.m. when he was attacked, police said. He was knocking on car windows in search of the ride he’d called when an unidentified man stepped out of one of the cars and punched him in the face, family and friends told WPEC.

The blow caused Szabo to fall back onto the pavement and lose consciousness, authorities said. He was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, where he later died.

The attacker, a bald man last seen wearing a light long sleeved shirt and jeans, fled the scene in a white SUV, police said.

“I hope they find him and bring him to justice,” coworker Josh Gillon told WPEC. “This was really a stupid, stupid act.

“It’s a big family and he was an important part of it so everybody is just heartbroken.”

Detectives cuff suspect behind a deadly assault in Long Island City (UPDATED)

Cops have charged a North Carolina man who reportedly coaches at a major university basketball program with an assault in Long Island City last weekend that resulted in a Florida man’s death.

On Sunday, Aug. 5, at approximately 1:15 a.m, it was reported to police that a witness standing on the sidewalk on 29th Street saw an intoxicated man banging on random cars.

One of the cars that the 35-year-old victim banged on belonged to Jamil Jones, 35, from North Carolina, authorities said.

The New York Post reported that Jones is an assistant basketball coach at Wake Forest University.

Jones allegedly got out of his car and punched the man in the face on the corner of 29th Street and 41st Avenue.

The victim, who has been identified as Sandor Szabo from Florida, fell back and lost consciousness when his head hit the pavement, police said.

Officers from the 114th Precinct responded to the scene. Paramedics brought Szabo to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries on Tuesday, Aug. 7 at 2:25 p.m. Police confirmed that the victim’s family has been notified of his death.

Police sources said that Jones has been arrested and charged with 3rd-degree assault, but the investigation is ongoing.
