After three years of construction, the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation celebrated the official grand opening of the second phase of Hunters Point South Park on June 27th. Visitors are now welcome to enjoy the scenic pathways and breathtaking views at this 5.5-acre expansion.
The Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks take over a chunk of the East River in less than two days, and the event is expected to draw as many as three million spectators to watch the massive pyrotechnics display. (Four barges in the river will fire off 3,000 fireworks per minute for the duration of the 25-minute display. Whoa.)
While everyone is looking for the best places to watch the spectacular, it’s also important to know how public transportation and getting around Manhattan will be affected.
With all of those people crowding either side of the East River—the prime viewing spots are in Midtown Manhattan and Long Island City—it’s a sure bet that streets, and traffic, are going to be a gigantic mess on Wednesday. The NYPD has announced its list of street closures for the fireworks, and unsurprisingly, many of the big thoroughfares in those parts of Manhattan and Queens—including large portions of the FDR Drive and Center Boulevard—will be shut down.

In both boroughs, the closures are at the discretion of the NYPD, but expect them to begin sometime in the afternoon and last well after the fireworks end.
On Staten Island, meanwhile, the Travis 4th of July Parade—the self-proclaimed longest running annual Independence Day parade—will host its 107th annual event beginning at noon. That event will cause traffic irregularities as the procession travels throughout Travis, Staten Island, from noon to 3 p.m.

On Wednesday, the subway will operate on a Saturday schedule; there are also some service changes, which the MTA has helpfully listed here. Of particular note: some bus routes through Manhattan and Brooklyn will be affected due to the fireworks street closures.
According to NBC4NY, “There will be no 6 or 7 express service. B trains will not run, customers are encouraged to use the A, C, D, and/or Q instead. There will be increased subway service on the 4, 7, A, C, F, N, and S 42nd Street Shuttle prior to and following the Macy’s fireworks celebration, which will originate from five barges on the East River between 23rd and 41st Streets from 9:25 p.m. to 9:50 p.m.”
NYC Ferry will also be impacted by the event, with all four of its routes operating on a weekend schedule, and the following changes to specific routes:

There will be no midtown shuttle bus service provided on this day. Shuttle buses will resume normal service on July 5, 2018.
Excavation has officially wrapped and a rendering has been revealed for Long Island City’s “Triangle” residential building, located at 43-12 Hunter Street. When complete, the project will stand 18 stories over Long Island City and will introduce 123 rental units to the expanding community. The Court Square Blog first reported on the progress.
Designed by SLCE Architects, Triangle is expected to include approximately 4,000 square feet of retail area spanning both cellar and ground floor levels, a lounge, a fitness center, and a rooftop terrace. Slade Architecture will oversee interior design of the project.
Rockrose Development reportedly purchased the build site for $1 million in 2006 which is located directly across the street from The Hayden, also under development by Rockrose and designed by SLCE Architects.
Excavation at 43-23 Hunter Street kicked off in the first quarter of 2018 with full completion anticipated by the fourth quarter of 2019.

The companies responsible for Long Island City’s newest office spaces celebrated the unveiling of its recently developed lobby and courtyard on Thursday.
Related Fund Management and GreenOak Real Estate held a celebration to showcase the new developments in The Blanchard Building, located at 21-10 51st Ave.
Tenants and neighbors were treated to local beers on tap, gourmet food trucks and a live DJ. Attendees were also invited to watch the England versus Belgium soccer match during their FIFA World Cup watch party. In addition to the festivities, guests were also invited on an exclusive tour of the unveiled spaces.
The developments are part of a $10 million capital improvement program, which include an entrance and lobby on 51st Avenue, a landscaped courtyard, improved air conditioning, new bathrooms and updated mechanical and electrical systems.
The Blanchard, along with a commercial building called The Paragon, are the two marquee buildings that make up a new commercial and retail community called The Point LIC. Construction on The Blanchard Building was finished in 2017, and it is currently home to VaynerMedia, which describes itself as a “full service digital agency built for the now.”
The office space was built in a former Long Island City warehouse located in the heart of Hunters Point. The seven-story, 220,000 square foot development features state-of-the-art amenities like large windows with 360 degree views, 11-foot ceilings and spacious open floor plans.
In the fall of 2017, Related Fund and GreenOak unveiled The Paragon, a seven-story 130,000 square foot commercial development, which is located at 21-00 49th Ave. The commercial building is also undergoing its own $20 million capital improvement, which also includes a new entry and lobby, passenger elevators and façade restoration.

A public art project is underway in Long Island City, with a workshop and fundraiser already in store to garner community support for it.
The mural, with no definitive location as of yet, will likely be painted at one of several sites under consideration in the Hunters Point area, including Hunters Point Community Park and the LIC Dog Park on Vernon Boulevard.
The mural is still in its early stages of planning, but is a collaborative effort between an arts non-profit and several private donors and volunteers—all spearheaded by one local woman.
Sindy Aprigliano, a Queens native who has lived in Long Island City with her young family for nearly a decade, wants to see more artwork in Hunters Point.
“I want to do something that helps promote the cultural and artistic identity of the neighborhood,” Aprigliano said.
The area, while ever-growing, still retains an industrial feel, and doesn’t showcase the fact that people and families are actually living here, Aprigliano said. She believes Hunters Point needs more public art to promote a residential vibe.
“It’s one of those neighborhoods where all of these buildings are getting built, but there’s not a neighborhood feel,” she said.
Aprigliano has enlisted the help of Morgan Stanley, where she works, and CITYarts, a non-profit public arts and education organization, to get the mural project started.

One of the project’s first major steps will be taken this Saturday, when a workshop will be held to gather ideas from neighborhood kids and families as to the images and concepts they want displayed.
The mural will follow a theme of “peace,” Aprigliano said, and is one of many works that will form part of CITYarts “Pieces For Peace” collection.
The workshop will aim to have children come up with ideas and images centered on peace, which will then be synthesized by a professional artist and rendered into what will become the actual artwork for the mural.
“The genesis of the project is that kids come up with the idea for the mural,” Aprigliano said. “We don’t dictate it to them.”
Filling in the mural itself, however, will be done by local children, families, and other volunteers with the aid of the artist over the course of several sessions and months.
Aprigliano anticipates that the artwork and painting will begin in July, once a permit to paint at a desired location has been issued.
The perforated walls of Hunters Point Community Park on Vernon Boulevard and 48th Avenue, for example, is Aprigliano’s preferred location for the mural. But the permits must be approved by the MTA and the State Parks Department, a process still being worked out.
In addition, $45,000 needs to be raised in order for the project to be completed. Private donors, including Morgan Stanley, have already donated toward the project, but roughly $40,000 remains to be raised, Aprigliano said.
This Saturday’s workshop will also act as a fundraiser for the mural. For instance, a piece of art by Peter Sis, the famed illustrator and author of children’s books, will be auctioned off at the event.
The mural, if permits are secured, should be completed by October, and will be the first public art project in Queens by CITYarts.

Former Webster Hall executive vp and chief operating officer Rich Pawelczyk has joined the management team at The Arc, a 20,000-sq.-ft. new concert and recording venue in the Kaufman Arts District of Long Island City in Queens, considered New York’s fastest-growing neighborhood.
The venue is part of John Belitsky‘s DMNDR network, a global community of artists, musicians and fans that user DMNDR to share their work. The venue will serve as DMNDR’s physical concert and recording venue.
As COO, Pawelczyk will oversee bookings, brand sponsorship programs and strategic media partnerships for The Arc, which opens in early 2019. The Arc is set in a 1931 vintage building that features multiple performance spaces, a state-of-the-art recording studio, a sound stage and high-grade acoustics that organizers say “will rank among the finest in the world.” Taking up a full city block, the venue will include a media center for streaming, a 24-hour café featuring the cuisine of 600+ local food vendors and spaces for local talent and community collaborations.
“A project of this size and magnitude doesn’t happen too often in New York City,” said Pawelczyk, which he estimates is only 12 minutes from Midtown Manhattan via car or subway.
“The building itself is the connective tissue to all the things we hope to be doing,” he says. “It has a beautiful Douglas Fir wood arc in the ceiling, which is one of the reasons we named the venue The Arc, as well as the career arc for artists playing in our smallest space and then our larger space and then doing some of the digital properties we’re going to be rolling out in conjunction with the brick and mortar.”
The building’s small performance space has a capacity of 389, while the larger performance space can hold 1,690. The venue’s home is in Long Island City in Queens, across from the Astoria neighborhood, which has become a movie-making hub for New York. The venue currently has a limited permit to do event invitation-only events in the smaller space during construction. Pawelczyk also stressed the event is truly a 24-hour-a-day space for recording and rehearsing.
“The decimation of the recording studio business in New York has left a dearth of real places to record and play,” he explains. “To actually capture a drum sound on a stage with the superlative acoustic set we’ll be offering is something that really differentiates, a certain level of bands to a higher level of recording”
Joining Pawelczyk at the Arc is Grammy award-winning producer/engineer Adam Abeshouse to oversee acoustics for the venue and help develop sound technology to retrofit the nearly 87-year-old venue, that’s hosted early performances by LoveHoney, Madison McFerrin, Jackie Venson, Jon Fratelli (of the Fratellis), Oxymorrons, Mosie and more. Current performances are by invitation only and occur weekly.
Pawelczyk spent nine years at Webster Hall, holding ticketed shows for artists like Lindsay Stirling and Wiz Khalifa. He said it was his experience with the 132-year-old building, which last year was bought by Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment and AEG Presents, that helped him encouraged features like a simple drive-in loading dock to make unloading shows easier.
“We want to be innovative and we have already proved to at least ourselves and now it’s up to us to prove to the community at large that we will be innovative,” he said. “We all got involved with such an ambitious project and we are putting together our team to program these rooms, none of which are unsubstantial in their design or their execution. We have the ability to do a lot of things including festivals and work with businesses in the community and the city. We have an open door and more importantly, an open mind as far as how we program and what we program.”
A popular ice cream shop returned to Long Island City for the summer.
To celebrate their three-year anniversary, Ice Vice opened up a pop-up store in the neighborhood where it all started. The popular ice cream and frozen dessert shop popped-up in the converted studio of renowned local artist William Lamson.
The shop is located at 27-20 Jackson Ave. and opened for business on June 22 for their soft opening and June 23 for the grand opening.
Ken Lo, who co-owns Ice Vice with Paul Kim, said that coming back to the place where it all started was touching for the both of them.
“We have such a loyal fanbase, it’s been quite amazing,” said Lo, who added that “so many people got excited” when they found out that Ice Vice was coming home.
“The neighborhood was yearning for it [Ice Vice],” he added.
The shop sells its signature ice cream flavors, with titles like Milk Money, Tea Dance and Shade. In addition, Ice Vice also brought back a rotation of fan favorites that are site-specific in order to bring something unique to the Long Island City location. Lo shared that offering unique products is something that he tries to implement in all of the shops.
He revealed that the special flavors are ones that they used to have when they first started selling in food markets, including Happy Panda, a black rice horchata sorbet, Tico Time, guava ice cream with chili-lime plantain chip and Thai-Phoon, a Thai tea mango sorbet with sumac jiggery. A selection of unique ice cream sandwiches and pies are also available.
In addition to their beloved sweet treats, the shop also features visual treats provided by William Lamson. The artist created light fixtures specifically for the Long Island City pop-up and they are displayed throughout the shop to compliment Ice Vice’s “experimental menu.”
Lo said that the idea for the collaboration came from the owners and developers of the building. He added that the clean aesthetic of the shop was intentionally done in order to “mimic a gallery-type feel.”
Before opening up their first brick-and-mortar location on the Lower East Side in 2015, Ice Vice sold their frozen treats at food markets like LIC Flea Food, Astoria Flea Food and others across the city. They won a Vendy award in 2014 for best dessert. The company also opened an I SCREAM Kiosk in Time Square in 2017.
The pop-up had its soft opening on June 22 and its grand opening on June 23 from noon to 9 p.m. During the grand opening, the shop sold $1 scoops from noon to 2 p.m. Though the pop-up is slated to run from June through the end of the summer, Lo said that the LIC location is a “test” to gauge neighborhood interest. If all goes well, he said they may end up staying longer than planned.

Permits filed for 11-52 44th Drive in Long Island City reveal a new seven-story development coming to the bustling Queens community. The mixed-use structure will contain both commercial and residential space for a total built area of 15,341 square feet.
The residential portion will account for the majority of the building at 14,902 square feet, divided among 23 units. At just under 650 square feet apiece, rentals are most likely. Commercial area will account for a modest 439 square feet. Plans also include a five-vehicle enclosed parking structure.
Local architect Dezhang Fang will oversee design of the new building. Shuhua Zhao of 11-52 Haocheng LLC is listed as the developer.

Developers of The Arc, a new performing arts center coming to Long Island City, announced a new chief operating officer for the project on Tuesday evening.
Richard Pawelczyk, the former executive vice president of Webster Hall, has been brought on to the team of the music venue and concert hall.
“I’m thrilled to join the team as the The Arc is taking shape as a world-class concert venue that can accommodate not just live performances with unsurpassed acoustics, but also with state-of-the-art digital recording and streaming technology that will enable us to create unique experiences for fans — and the brands that want to reach them — in New York City around the world. We’re already seeing a flood of initial interest among artists and sponsors because, with incredible design, location, and technology, The Arc is poised to fill a void in both the New York music scene and in the industry as a whole,” said Pawelczyk.
As the COO, he will be responsible for overseeing the upcoming calendar of concerts, live events, and performances as well as brand sponsorship programs, strategic media partnerships and business affairs.
Pawelczyk was with Webster Hall for nine years, from 2008 to 2017. During his time there, he and his team hosted major concert series with media partners like SiriusXM, Spotify, Univision and MTV and producing the first ticketed shows for talent like violinist Lindsey Stirling and rapper Wiz Khalifa.
John Belitsky is the founder and president of DMDNR, which is the organization behind The Arc’s development. He expressed his excitement to be working on the project with Pawelcyzk.
“During Rich’s tenure, Webster Hall became one of the leading concert venues of its size in the world. His unparalleled ability to attract the most relevant talent in music—both established artists and emerging talent—coupled with our attention to acoustical excellence—will make The Arc a world-class performance hall and incubator for talent, and create unforgettable experiences for fans,” said Belitsky.
The Arc was approved by Community Board 1 last month, and will be located in the Kaufman Arts District. When completed, the 20,000 square foot concert hall and recording studio will feature state-of-the-art recording equipment and acoustics, a 24-hour cafe featuring the cuisine of over 600 local vendors and a sound stage. According to Belitsky, The Arc will be opened 24 hours a day to accommodate for musician’s varying schedules and creative processes. The venue will also be able to hold 2,000 people at maximum capacity.
Recently, the venue has been hosting small, invite-only performances and sessions with artists like LoveHoney, Madison McFerrin, Jackie Venson, Jon Fratelli (of the Fratellis), Oxymorrons and Mosie.
Construction of The Arc is set to be completed by early 2019.

There has been a significant increase in the number of shootings in the 114th Precinct this year, despite the overall crime rate for the Astoria precinct remaining low.
The NYPD reports that that 10 people have been shot in the precinct for the year through June 17, up from two for the same period a year ago.
“Most of our shootings are taking place on housing developments,” said Deputy Inspector Osvaldo Nunez at the 114th Community Precinct Meeting on Tuesday. “We have taken 3 shootings in the last four to six weeks on housing property. Shootings on housing developments continue to be a problem.”
The precinct covers several public housing developments—such as Queensbridge Houses, Ravenswood Houses as well as Astoria Houses and Woodside Houses.

This year, there have also been several high-profile shootings at or near these locations. In March, Sharef Graham, 25, was shot dead in a walkway by Queensbridge Houses and in January a 28-year-old woman was hit by a stray bullet in Queensbridge. She survived.
“Most of the shootings take place in Queensbridge and Ravenswood,” Nunez said. He said the NYPD is monitoring a number of crews—which consist of between 15 to 30 members—in the housing developments.
He said that there are five known crews in Queensbridge, four in Ravenswood, two in Astoria Houses and one in Woodside Houses. A small dispute between a crew can result in a shooting.
Nunez said the NYPD is working to reduce the violence—although he didn’t go into any detail as to how.

Barone Management is developing a 100,000-square foot office and industrial-flex space building, in Long Island City, NY.
Multifamily and hospitality development has soared over the last decade in Long Island City, the slice of Queens hugging the East River’s eastern shore. One- and two-story warehouses had long squatted along the city’s industrial byways, but steel-and-glass high-rises have supplanted those aging industrial edifices in a wholesale upending of Long Island City’s traditional character. It seems everything in Long Island City has been purpose-built, designed and constructed to serve markets pinpointed before the first yard of concrete was poured.
It’s taken Scott Barone, founder and president of New York City-based Barone Management, and a lifelong resident of Queens, to journey down the road less traveled. Barone has broken ground on Long Island City’s first commercial spec development in a generation or more.
Once completed, the three-story, approximately 100,000-square-foot structure promises to be malleable enough to house both office and industrial or flex-space tenants, while delivering enviable city and water views and spectacular frontage along four streets.
Built for LIC
In a way, it’s a building customized to the new Long Island City. With greater numbers of local residents has come increased need for support businesses, Barone says. The development’s prime driver is the notion that new, high-quality industrial and office product can be tailored to smaller businesses that require between 2,200 and 5,200 square feet. ‘We’re going to appeal to small and medium-sizes businesses that never had quality space before,’ Barone says.
Also helping will be the building’s proximity to Manhattan right across the river, and its setting even closer to the 25,000 units of housing being built in the current cycle in LIC.
Convenience will be a critical selling point. Barone’s building will be within steps of Court Square, the Ed Koch Queensboro Bridge and the Queensboro Plaza subway station, now undergoing NYMTA renovation. The station will be a key cog in the LaGuardia Airport Access project, a major Big Apple infrastructure improvement. For a limited time, art lovers can view pieces by an internationally renowned glass artist in a Long Island City gallery.
Oregon-born, Hawaii-based artist Charles Lowrie will debut “Ancestral Knowledge: Spheres of Consciousness” at the newly opened 23 Space gallery at 23-22 51st Ave. The installation features over a dozen curated works that take viewers on a “labyrinth of visual sensations.”
“Ancestral Knowledge” is Lowrie’s first major glass installation in New York City, and will be on display from June 28 to July 7.
Before trying his hand at glass art, Lowrie worked as a scientific glass apprentice with JL Scientific in Portland. In 1998, he began an apprenticeship with Venetian glass master Pino Signoretto, during which he assisted in the designs of prolific artists like Jeff Koons and Dale Chihuly.
Following his five-year stint in Italy, Lowrie returned to America with a wealth of experience, which led to him creating works that people recognized as “transcendent and visionary.” Soon he was involved with major installations sponsored by Coca-Cola and Adidas, and released his 2012 collection “Trancensions,” which later exhibited at Philadelphia’s National Liberty Museum.
Lowrie has also shown his work in international exhibits in countries like Germany, Belgium, Turkey and the Netherlands.
The interactive installation is presented by Samadhi NYC, a local artist management agency.
“Ancestral Knowledge: Spheres of Consciousness” debuts tonight and will be on display through July 7.
